The owners are newlyweds who like Japanese design. In addition to adding Japanese elements, designer Jonathan also added elements that are easy for people to accept the rustic style. The effect is fresh and friendly.
The home furnishings are comfortable with rich colours, mainly using light wood and white colour and matching with earth tone gray, blue and green to bring a warm feeling to the home.
Living room design: breaking the typical pattern
Originally, the unit consisted of three bedrooms and two living rooms. As the owner wanted the living room to be more visually spacious, Jonathan changed the kitchen to an open style, and at the same time transformed the corner room into a semi-open study room. The kitchen and study room are integrated into the living room to extend the view, which greatly enhance the sense of space.
The rustic design emphasizes warmth and liveliness. In addition to using wooden elements, Jonathan also added a lot of lively decorations. The wall of the living room is mainly white, but to bring out a soft feeling, Jonathan used white brick wallpaper. The white brick pattern makes the wall more textured, and at the same time it is not too fancy, but can effectively bring out other home furnishings.
The white wall makes the living room brighter, but there should be more than one colour for the living room wall. So, pastel blue is used for the wall where the sofa is, creating a soft feeling in the living room.
Many people choose to use mirrors to enhance the sense of space on the traditional dining room C-shaped cabinet. This unit is equipped with gray patterned tiles to create a rustic and lovely feeling.
Study room design: semi-open wooden platform
The owners do not work long hours in the study, and do not require high privacy and quietness in the study, so Jonathan opened up the study room. The study mainly makes use of wood colour, and the wooden platform greatly enhances the Japanese feeling.
As the living room emphasizes on the sense of space, there are not many storage spaces, but the owners hope to have more storage capacity. To compensate for the lack of TV cabinets in the living room, wooden platforms and wooden cabinets are built in the study.
Bathroom design: Japanese style bath tub
The bathroom behind a white sliding door opposite the study is also a highlight. The original unit had two toilet areas. Taking into account the owner’s preference for Japanese design, Jonathan combined the two toilets into one, increasing the bathroom space and turning it into a shower room that can accommodate a bathtub and a shower cubicle. A Japanese style bath tub was then built.
Jonathan chose thin strips of wood pattern tiles for the entire bathroom space, while separating the shower and bathing spaces. He also collected some Japanese style items such as small wooden chairs and wooden buckets to imitate Japanese style bathroom.
Bedroom design: calm old-fashioned rustic style
The design of the master bedroom is slightly different from that of the living room, which the former one is of traditional rustic style. The bed frame, headboard and bedside table are all made of dark wood. The texture and color make the room more calm and relaxing, which makes it a nice place for rest.
Kitchen design: gray rustic kitchen
The open kitchen uses light gray to divide the cooking area. The simple floral lines of the kitchen cabinet doors are matched with white rectangular bricks at the back wall, which brings out the flavour of the American rural cottage kitchen.
The marble countertop is equipped with a wooden frame with metal edges for placing exquisite eating utensils, adding a little light industrial style to the Japanese rustic style is an unexpected match.
Thoughtful design
Blackboard magnet wall
There is a blackboard magnet wall at the entrance. The reason is that the two owners like traveling and taking photos. When Jonathan visited their old house, he saw that they had a photo wall, so he wanted to use a similar method to allow the owner to display the photos and decided to add it at the entrance. With a blackboard magnet wall, the content can be more flexible and easier to handle.
Wooden beams for decoration
Jonathan focuses on the design elements, and every detail of the space has been carefully considered. He hopes that guests will find new things and surprises every time they visit, making the home more attractive.
He thought that the wooden beams in the rural wooden houses are something that no longer appears in today’s buildings. So, he transformed the wooden beams that originally represented practical uses into design elements and placed them on the ceiling of the corridors, adding symbolic meaning to them and increase the rustic sense.
Full-length mirror in the kitchen
There is also a surprising detail in the kitchen next to the entrance. A full-length mirror can be pulled out of the cabinet next to the fridge. Jonathan thought that the mirror does not require a large space, so he took advantage of the cabinet’s 24-inch depth to hide the mirror. As long as the space of the refrigerator is widened a little, this setting can be achieved, and the owner can pull out the full-length mirror for tidying up when going out.
